John Roger Calkins

January 11, 1936 — March 10, 2023

Friday, March 10th, John “Roger” Calkins, a beloved father and uncle, passed away at eighty-seven years old.

Roger married Jean M. Calkins (nee) Hinkel in April 1959.  They returned from their honeymoon to find his draft notice had arrived. He served two years in the Army in Lawton, Oklahoma, where both his surviving daughters, Christine and Tamara, were born.  Later, when they moved back to Parma, Ohio, his son Russell was born.  For the remainder of his life, he remained a resident of Parma, Ohio. Roger’s wife, Jean and son, Russell preceded him in death.

Roger owned a TV repair business for over 20 years and expanded it to include video rentals.  He was active in the Masons for over sixty years, and the Shriner’s for over 20 years. He was proud to be a volunteer driver for the Shriner’s to take patients and their families to both the hospitals both in Cincinnati, Ohio and Erie, Pennsylvania for their appointments and treatments. Roger was able to continue this volunteer work up until October of 2022.

A memorial service will be Saturday, March 25th at 1:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, located at 5930 State Rd, Parma, Ohio, with fellowship to follow the service.

In lieu of flowers donations may be directed to the Transportation unit of the Al Koran Shrine, in honor of his service.  Donations can be sent to Al Koran Shrine Center, PO Box 81184, Cleveland, Ohio 44181.  Checks should be made out to Al Koran Shrine Transportation Fund, with a subject noting "In memory of Roger Calkins".
